Skin diseases of the breast and nipple
The evaluation and management of dermatologic diseases of the breast and nipple requires an understanding of the unique anatomy of the breast and nipple and an awareness of the significant emotional, cultural, and sexual considerations that may come into play when treating this anatomic area. The first article in this continuing medical education series reviews breast anatomy, congenital breast anomalies, and benign and malignant breast tumors. An emphasis is placed on inflammatory breast cancer and breast cancer with noninflammatory skin involvement and on cutaneous metastases to the breast and from breast cancer.

Treatment decision-making in the medical encounter: Comparing the attitudes of French surgeons and their patients in breast cancer care
Conclusion: Most surgeons reported adopting the “some sharing” approach. However, one patient out of three reported that they would have liked to participate more in the TDM process.Practice implications: Surgeons need to ask patients what their preferences for involvement in TDM are and then think about ways to accommodate both their own and patients’ preferences regarding the TDM process to be used in each encounter. In addition, decision aids could be offered to surgeons to help them discuss treatment options with their patients.

The central role of peers facilitators in the empowerment of breast cancer patients: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights patient associations can serve as the mediator of NPI and facilate the empowerment of breast cancer patients.PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Educating health professionals in initial and continuing education about non-pharmacological interventions will be a major issue. Teaching the patient-centred approach to health professionals is one of the priorities in initial and continuing medical education.PMID:35871655 | DOI:10.1186/s12905-022-01892-x

This study investigated the utility of online CME for emergency physicians in Nova Scotia. Early outcomes of arthroplasty of the first carpometacarpal joint using pyrocarbon spherical implantsGiven its workload, the first carpometacarpal joint is the most common hand joint to develop osteoarthritis. When nonsurgical, conservative treatment options fail, surgical management is warranted. Although several surgical procedures are available, hand surgeons are revisiting implant arthroplasty despite the absence of an ideal implant design and material. The physical and biological properties of pyrocarbon, however, have recently ...

Abstract P2-11-01: Treatment of metastatic breast cancer patients by community health practitioners: Practice pattern and competence assessments
Conclusions: The results highlight the diversity of current clinical practice in the community practice setting for patients with metastatic breast cancer and the positive impact of focused education. Knowledge and competence practice gaps were identified to pinpoint specific areas of benefit for the community practice setting in the treatment of patients with metastatic breast cancer. Cuba Has Made At Least 3 Major Medical Innovations That We Need
By most measures, the United States' business-friendly environment has proven to be fertile for medical innovation. Compared to other countries, America has filed the most patents in the life sciences, is conducting most of the world's clinical trials and has published the most biomedical research. That's what makes the medical prominence of Cuba all the more surprising to those who view a free market as an essential driver of scientific discovery. Cuba is very poor, and yet the country has some of the healthiest, most long-lived residents in the world -- as well as a medical invention or two that could run circl...

Primary Care Physicians' Perspectives in Leading Breast Cancer Follow-Up Care
CONCLUSIONS: Transitioning to a PCP-led model was supported by most of the PCPs who participated in this study. Their perspective on PCP-led follow up care and barriers associated with implementation of this model of care needs to be further explored with future studies that include larger sample size and a more diverse PCP population.PMID:34955431 | DOI:10.1016/j.clbc.2021.11.011

Abstract P1-10-16: Improving provider adherence to breast cancer care quality metrics: Use of a novel care planning tool
Conclusions: The On Q CPS, a care planning software tool, has the potential to both improve provider adherence to NQS and allow institutions an easy and accessible way to document that adherence.Citation Format: Hathaway A, Halilova K, Gaguski ME, Thomas K, Dudley WN, Stricker CT, Hammelef KJ, Panzer SL, Rocque GB. Advice to Rest for More Than 2 Days After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Is Associated With Delayed Return to Productivity: A Case-Control Study
Conclusions: mTBI patients continue to be told to rest for longer than expert recommendations and practice guidelines. This study supports growing evidence that prolonged rest after mTBI is generally unhelpful, as patients in the exposure group were less likely to have resumed work/school at 1–2 months post-injury. We could not identify patient characteristics associated with getting prolonged rest advice. Further exploration of who gets told to rest and who delivers the advice could inform strategic de-implementation of this clinical practice. Introduction In the early twenty-first century, complete rest unt...
